Last week I finally did something I have been thinking about for a long time, a did a three day juice cleanse! I found a lovely Adelaide based company Purepress , they do 1, 3 and 5 day cleanses and they do two different types of cleanses, purify and balance. Balance is designed for everybody whereas purify is more so for juicing veterans. I chose balance as it was my first time and this was definitely the right choice for me! The beautiful juices were delivered to my door the day before my cleanse started and came packed on ice. They also included two pamphlets with information to help guide you through. I also had an amazing spa treatment at Swisswellness spa in Adelaide which is designed to help detox the body with the use of an infrared sauna and detoxifying clay mask, I will give more detail later in my post!
DAY 1: I woke feeling excited/nervous/motivated and started my day with a warm lemon water. The day before I started my cleanse I ate vegan to prepare myself, ideally I would have done this longer but my weekend plans didn’t allow this. So! after my lemon water I had my first juice the pure green which is a combination of celery, cucumber, kale, spinach, cos, parsley, ginger, apple and lemon. It was certainly a lot stronger in flavour to juices I normally make for myself, but I didn’t mind it! After this I went for a 7km walk with a friend and our dogs outside along the creek which was nice, I noticed my first hunger pangs whilst walking but they dissipated quickly. I did a few chores after and had my second juice around 11am, the vitalize a combination or carrot, orange, pineapple, apple, lemon and tumeric, yum! I loved this juice and slurped it down happily in front of the tv! I managed to watch my partner eat his lunch while I drank my third juice and I was fine, but around 3/4pm I was craving food in a big way, watching three cooking shows in a row was certainly not the best idea! I ended up having my coconut milk around 5 as I really needed something more substantial as I usually eat dinner early and I had my last juice on the couch a few hours before bed, first day down!
DAY 2: I awoke feeling less than energetic and the smell of my partners toast wafting into the bedroom did not make me want to jump out of bed for a green juice! I had my warm lemon water then chugged down my green juice, which did perk me up just a little bit. I headed to work for a few hours which ended up to be quite a struggle I had my second juice at work and by the time I headed home I was reaaaaally struggeling my energy levels were low and I had a slight headache. I decided to have half a banana with my lunch time green juice, they recommend that if you need to eat you should stick to a carrot, celery stick, banana or some almonds! After this I went for a very slow walk outdoors with my dog which helped make me feel better. I came home and had a hot shower, did a face mask, moisturized my whole body, anything to keep my mind of food! The day-dream juice was definitely my saviour at the end of the day, a combination of coconut/almond milk, honey, vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg, it really was a dream. I went to bed feeling hungry!
DAY 3: I woke again feeling tired but also really amazed at how much better my digestion was feeling after only two days! It had been so long since I had felt not bloated I had forgotten what it even felt like! No more discomfort of any sort, incredible. I was still feeling hungry but had my lemon water and green juice and went for a walk with my dog! My morning was uneventful, I was learning to ignore the hunger pangs, so long as I didn’t get too close to any food of any sort! I had to go to uni for a class in the afternoon which was a good distraction and knowing I was so close to the end made it somewhat easier to push through. Once home food was all I could think about I was sooo close to saying ‘ah well I pretty much finished it..’ and having a big dinner but I knew i’d be dissapointed in myself, I had come this far after all! I went to bed early excited to eat breakfast the next day!
DAY 4 : POST CLEANSE
Finally! I woke up well before my alarm NOT feeling exhausted! My body was feeling lean and any tummy troubles had disappeared! I was almost nervous to eat again as I didn’t want to lose this feeling. The three days without any processed food whatsoever really made me start thinking about how many different things I put into my body and what may be causing issues. I started the day with some soaked gluten free oats and chia seeds with fruit, lunch was a fresh vegetarian salad and for dinner I had a salmon steak with steamed greens! I have really decided thoughout this experience that I want to watch my intake of dairy and gluten as I feel so good after removing these from my diet. All in all it was an eye opening experience and I learnt a lot about myself and my food habits and it has helped get me back on track. Before I did this I had been indulging far too much, and was feeling helpless and out of control, this experience helped show me that I really am the only one in control of what I put into my body, and I have a lot more self control than I thought!
When I told people I was doing this cleanse, many people recommended that I get a massage as well to encourage the release of toxins + added relaxation. Swisswellness is a spa on King William Road and they are currently doing some winter specials! On my first day post cleanse I went in for their ‘Intensive Winter Detox” it involved an infrared sauna, dry body brush, full body clay mask and then a massage, pure bliss. It was my first experience with an infrared sauna and I have to say I was impressed. It has been found to release more toxins through sweat than a regular sauna and can also burn calories, improve circulation, cell health and many other health benefits! The clay mask is a mix of detoxifying organic essential oils and mineral rich sea clay which helps to purify the body by stimulating the lymphatic system and finally a massage using their active SwissWellness Cellu-lite body lotion leaving my skin toned and firm! It was truly the perfect way to end my cleanse, it further detoxified my body and left me feeling relaxed and centered! I couldn’t reccomend Swisswellness enough the staff was lovely and the atmosphere was too!
